The Functional Polymer Laboratory's research facilities and offices at the
Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at
CASE are located in the Kent Hale Smith Building.
The group's laboratories complement the shared central
facilities of the Department of Macromolecular Science
and Engineering. The three labs offer 1400 sqft. of
research space and include a fully equipped
synthetic facility that provides space for about 12
full-time researchers (KHS 502 and 526).
The synthesis equipment includes a glove-box, several
vacuum-lines (for Schlenk-techniques), vacuum and drying
ovens, rotary evaporators, balances, high-pressure
reactor, centrifuge, icemaker, and an extensive
collection of laboratory glassware.
The facilities further embrace a 200 sqft. analytic laboratory (KHS 525) equipped with a
steady-state polarized fluorescence spectrometer (SPEX
Fluorolog 3), a fluorescence spectrometer with
steady-state and lifetime capability (PTI),
optical-intensity meter, calibrated photodiode, various
UV and visible light sources, two polarized optical
microscopes with conventional 35 mm as well as
high-resolution digital camera systems, two
source-measure units (Keithley), multiple vacuum metal
evaporators (Denton, Biorad) and a potentiostat system
(Princeton Applied Research) with two-phase lock-in
amplifier, which allows for ion conductivity
measurements.
The polymer processing equipment includes a spin-coater,
a micro twin-screw extruder (1-5 g), a hot-press and
several hot-stages.
