Polarized optical microscopy
image (crossed polarizers) of a blend of linear
low-density polyethylene and photoluminescent
1,4-bis-(a-cyano-4-methoxystyryl)-2,5-dimethoxybenzene.
The emission characteristics of
this and similar
dyes can strongly vary with the supramolecular
architecture of the system.
This dependence can be exploited
by integrating such dyes as molecular deformation
and temperature sensors
in a polymer of choice.
