Polarized optical microscopy

1,4-bis-(a-cyano-4-octadecyloxy-styryl)-2,5-dimethoxybenzene
in a liquid crystalline state.
The emission characteristics of
this and similar
photoluminescent dyes can strongly vary with the supramolecular
architecture of the system.This dependence can be exploited
by integrating such dyes as molecular deformation
and temperature sensors
in a polymer of choice.
